The Karoo Animal Protection Society is the only organisation providing a mobile service for animals in the deprived areas of the Little Karoo in rural South Africa.

In these poor communities, poverty is a way of life for animals and their owners. People who can barely feed their children, keep a dog, chain it up, and feed it potato peelings.  KAPS takes free welfare services on a daily basis into a core catchment area approaching 5,000 sq km, and operates Outreach Programmes into areas of the Eastern Cape, many hundreds of km distant from its home base in Barrydale.

Thousands of owners are assisted and educated. Emergencies are responded to 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Animals are dipped, de-wormed, fed, taken for treatment, sterilised, rescued and re-homed.

All this is done on a volunteer basis. KAPS has no office premises and pays no full-time staff. But we have an amazing success rate and have transformed the lives of animals and their owners in the communities where we work.

The Jeanne Marching Animal Welfare Award 2020 has awarded to our founder Colette Teal

Such a prestigious honour to such a deserving person!

Here is an excerpt from the announcement:

“As you may or may not be aware, each year the Trustees of the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust look to recognise “practical work in the field of animal welfare and protection, resulting in significant improvements for animals either nationally or internationally”.  This is done through the presentation of the Trust’s most prestigious award – ‘The Jeanne Marchig Animal Welfare Award’, named after and in memory of its Founder.

This year as in previous years, many worthy candidates were nominated by organisations and individuals from all over the world.  After much deliberation, it is with considerable pleasure that I write to inform you that you have been nominated and chosen by the Trustees, to receive ‘The Jeanne Marchig Animal Welfare Award 2020’, in recognition of your outstanding practical work over many years in the field of animal welfare and protection.”

Congratulations Colette Teal.  We are so happy for you!

We rely solely on donations from companies and the public.  Please consider donating to our cause to enable us to continue our work.  Every cent donated goes towards animal care and owner education.
